Your child starting school is an exciting time in your child’s life; moving on to new things. However, it can also be a little traumatic for all involved.
The information in the next few pages is designed to help you and your child adjust to school as easily as possible. If you have any worries or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The New Entrant class is designed to act as a transition into the school community. It provides a safe and happy environment for your child to begin his/her formal journey into learning.
Morning Routine
Children need to bring their book bag inside and put their reader in the box by the door. They then need to put their book bag in their desk and put down their chair. Finally they need to write their name on the computer and board.
Reading
Children will bring a book home every night, Monday – Thursday and their Poem/letterland books for the weekend. These are to promote a love of reading and the written word. Make it a positive experience – lots of praise; tell them the word if they don’t know it; encourage them to look at the pictures for clues and to point to each word as they read. It is my job to teach them to read and your job to tell them how well they are doing! Encourage use of the ‘magic finger’.
Developmental or ‘Choosing Time’
This takes place several times a week in the afternoon and is an intergral part of a Junior Programme. It involves providing the children with lots of stimulating creative choices and supervising them while they explore their creativity. Research shows it to be very important to your child’s overall development, enhancing language, creativity and social skills.
If you are ever early, please feel free to help with cleanup as it is a lot of work!
Swimming
Swimming will be in Term 1 and 4 three times a week with the class. Extra outside lessons are always encouraged.
Homework
This will be related mainly to reading and practice writing. It comes home in their Home Learning book or flash cards. It’s great if it is done but if it is causing a problem, especially when they first start, just leave it and let me know.
Parent Help
This is a wonderful asset to the class and if anyone is able to help it would be really appreciated.
PMP
Perceptual Motor Programming is a programme the Junior School has initiated to promote learning. This will start in Term 2.
School Lunch
Sausages and drinks $2 are available for purchase, from school, on Fridays. Children need to hand an envelope with their money and order to the office, Friday morning.
Things we need
Nails, small off cuts of wood, chocolate wrappers, shells, broken jewellery, coloured card, card offcuts, wool, lace, sparkly ‘stuff’ basically anything children can use to create.
